my cat is pregnant i need help plz read details!!!?

a man gave us two cats last year he said they were both fixed but the boy was but the girl wasnt now shes pregnant. the boy cat is not the father. the girl cat showed no signs of heat, so we did not know it when my brother let her out and she got pregnant. because she is an indoor cat. i am planning to keep one kitten and get the kitten and the mother fixed. i have no experience in this area. so when she has her kittens do i need to be with her. what can i do to help her. does she need any special foods(she is currently on kitten food) how can i tell how pregnant she is and when shell give birth(we could actually tell she was pregnant a little before this month about 30 days but we dont know exactly how long shes been pregnant) at what age can i actually pick up and handle the kittens. this is her first litter (we know that for sure) so about how many babies will she have. once again i have no experience so i need to know EVERYTHING about cat birth stuff
I have like a cat thing thats big enough for her to lay down and maybe 1-7 little kittens to crawl around. i put it behind the couch(where shes been spending a lot of time lately) its dark and is like a cave. i washed and tore up some old rags and shirts for padding. am i doing the right thing? she really seems to like it there plus i have easy acsess to it to moniter her or if something goes wrong. btw im only 14, my mom says shell help if i need it but since shes my cat and i want to be a vet when i grow up she said itll be good experience.

There’s no need for a special diet, You’ll just want food and water to be easily accessible for the mother and near her “nesting area” at all times. You should give her a dark place to give birth that’s well hidden and you shouldn’t bother her too much. Cats like their privacy while giving birth. Too much interference will make the mother uncomfortable and that’s when it can get dangerous for her, and she’ll possibly hold the kittens in which can cause death for both the mother and kittens. Try to only touch the kittens and refrain from carrying them, but make sure to still give attention to the mother. Good luck

you shouldn’t touch the kittens until you can get close to the mother and pet her wo/ her hissing….

It sounds like your doing well you are feeding her kitten food so is good its ideal, you have set up a nesting area where she likes so you do have an idea,so a cats pregnancy lasts approx 9 weeks, and they don’t start to show until 5 weeks or over, so if she is showing then you know she is on the 5th week or over,

when she is days from the birth she will produce her first milk this is known as colostrum it looks like dried up powder on her nipples,it appears around 3-4 days before so its a good clue of thing s are about to happen, other clues are her nipples will change to a darker pink colour the further along in pregnancy the darker they will become,

they start to spend more time in the nest during the last week or so,also check her tummy as the kittens start to kick and wriggle during the last week of pregnancy that’s because they are turning over in the womb ready for birth, there are lots of clues when the birth is about to happen, they are as follows,

    1)sleeping more than usual.

2).Nibbling on food as if unsure they want it or not.

3)Follow owners about and being extra affectionate, due to hormones.

4).Then when its about to happen, some get a touch of diarrhoea as its caused by mild contractions.

5)Losing her mucus plug, this looks like a gooey mess,a bit stringy she will lick it away.

6).wWaters breaking it either dribbles out or comes out in one go in a sack that bursts, this alarms many but its normal.

7)Starts to pace as labour begins, even meowing out to you first time mother cats get nervous so be with her,but give privacy but be there if she needs you.

8).Star to pant as labour gets stronger, even squeal all normal it sounds worse than it is,but if any problems get vet help, though complications are quite rare its wise to be alert.

9)Labour can last hours, anything from a couple to 12-24 hours with an hour or two between each one being born, but depends on how many she is having, first time mother cats can often have just the one kitten but wait and see.

then once they are all born be sure to give her privacy as that is very important to a cat,as they may move them, but she sounds happy with the nest you have created, you must have a nest building talent!

and it will be good experience for you your mom is right,i have been around many pregnant cats and have helped my mom raise 500+ kittens not all at once though! as for touching them it depends on the cat many are very fussy about it,so wait about 10 days or so,so that she can settle, then when you do go and see them touch first wait a few days before picking them up,and only if she seems relaxed about it,

the kittens eyes open at around 9-14 days old and ears open at 3 weeks old, weaning is introduced at 5 weeks old,use wet mashed up kitten food with kitten milk mashed in to make it easier to eat,but thats a few weeks away yet so relax,

i will give you a helpful link all about cat pregancy and birth it may help you,

hope i have put your mind at rest and been of some help, enjoy the kittens!
